How to Knit Stitch for Beginners

My interest in knitting started with the movie Little Women.

Jess, Liz, and I went to see it in theaters together, and we loved it. It starred so many of our favorite actresses, and we were caught up in all of it, from the cinematography to the wardrobe to how well we could relate to the March sisters.

Towards the summer, we were talking about how cool the shawls from the movie were, how we wished we had one. And then we decided we’d make our own, in true Little Women spirit.

Those shawls never actually came to be, but I did learn how to knit! While I still only know the basics, they can take you pretty far! The knit stitch and the purl stitch are used to make all kinds of things, and I’ve had fun combining the two to produce a ribbing pattern on a “scarf” (actual length and ability to work as a scarf TBD).

With school and work all happening online, it was nice to have something to do that got me off of a screen for a little while (Warning: knitting for extended periods of time can also give you an eye strain headache!)

I haven’t actually finished something recently, but I was able to knit some cute baby booties for new family members! And I’m still working on that “scarf” almost a year later. Maybe this will be the summer I actually finish.

If you’re looking to start knitting and making your own scarf, here are a few supplies I use:

Regardless of how long it takes to finish something, knitting is something I like to decompress with while watching TV. I hope you put your skills to the test too!
